Deadly coronavirus case confirmed in Greater Glasgow

- BY JACK AITCHISON

ACASE of the deadly coronavirus has been confirmed in the greater Glasgow area. It comes as the first UK casualty of the illness was announced by health bosses last night.

The patient, who hasn’t been identified, tested positive for the infection last night at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading on Wednesday night before succumbing to the illness yesterday, NHS officials revealed.

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer said yesterday morning that a further three patients in the country have tested positive for COVID-19.

That brings the total number of cases to six.

The patients are from the Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Forth Valley and Grampian areas.

All three new cases are contacts of known cases and are said to be clinically well and are receiving appropriate clinical care.

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood said: “With all these cases, our thoughts are with those diagnosed and their families.

“Scotland is well equipped to deal with this kind of infection and we are doing everything we can to contain the virus at this stage and minimise the risk to the public.”

Work is now underway to find and test those who have been in contact with the confirmed cases.

Scotland’s first COVID-19 case was revealed on Sunday evening with a patient from Tayside.

And on Wednesday two additional cases, from Ayrshire and Grampain, were made public.

During their daily 2pm briefing, the Scottish Government revealed an additional 210 tests took place in the 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday.

That brings the total of confimed negative cases to 1250.

Dr Catherine Calderwood added: “Clinicians are now conducting contact tracing, the process of gathering details of the places those who have tested positive visited and the people they have been in contact with. Close contact involves either face-to-face contact or spending more than 15 minutes within two metres of an infected person.

“The risk is very low in situations where someone may have passed a patient on the street or in a shop.

“Health protection teams will contact those who are at risk from the current cases – those who are not contacted are not at risk.
