Police believe Maryhill shooting was ‘targeted’

- BY RUTH SUTER

A23-YEAR-OLD man has been left with serious injuries after he was shot in the back in Maryhill on Thursday night.

At around 5.15pm, the victim was walking along Firhill Street before he was approached from behind by a man who shot him in the back.

It’s understood the suspect was wearing a balaclava with dark clothing and fled the scene via a grey or silver car.

The victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with serious injuries.

His condition is described as serious but not life threatening.

At about 6pm, police found a silver Hyundai car burntout on Coltmuir Street.

Police now believe the attack was ‘targeted’ and are now appealing for witnesses.

From the scene Detective

Chief Inspector Peter Sharp said: “We believe this is a targeted attack and we are using this as an opportunity to appeal for witnesses.

“The shooting took place on a busy road at a time where there would have been commuters, cars and other pedestrians in the area.

“I’d like to reassure the public there are additional patrols in the Maryhill area and I would encourage anyone to speak to the police if they have any concerns.

“Officers, detectives and a dedicated inquiry team are conducting CCTV and house to house inquiries to try and establish exactly what has gone on and the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

“Again, I want to reassure the public and the winder community there is no threat to the wider public.

“I’m appealing to anyone who has maybe seen the attack or any of the vehicles that are described to come forward and contact the police.

“If any motorists in the area have any dashcam footage available, I would appeal to them to share that and come forward.”

Firhill Street was closed off for around four hours after the attack took place.

One local told the Glasgow Times: “There are armed police all parked alongside the student accommodation near Firhill Stadium.

“Police were on the ground looking for something.

“I think something big has happened.”
