Euros postponed to aid league completion
UEFA yesterday confirmed that Euro 2020 has been pushed back a year in a bid to complete th league competitions of European competitions by the end of June.
The announcement, which supports leagues seeing out their fixtures to their conclusion, comes after there had been fears Celtic could be handed the title prematurely, and also amid other speculation that the season could be declared null and void.
The governing body held an emergency conference call with their 55 member associations, the European Clubs Association, the European Leagues and FIFPro, via video conference yesterday morning.
Announcing the decisions,
Aleksander Ceferin confirmed the governing body had made the “biggest sacrifice” but that it had to be done.
“We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent,” Ceferin said. “It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism.
“The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and in that spirit, UEFA tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football. There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result.”
