Cadder Road car robbery

- Community rallies to save greenbelt BY HAMISH MORRISON

RESIDENTS have hit back at housebuilding plans tabled for protected land in Summerston. Glasgow City Council has received more than 100 objections to plans for a private housing development on a greenbelt area north of Blackhill Gardens.

The council will consider concerns surrounding potential flooding, congestion, the impact on local wildlife and the suitability of private development in what is usually a mixed tenure area.

The council has received scores of letters objecting to the plans, including from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and a response from East Dunbartonshire council which says the it would “prefer that greenbelt release in this area is avoided”.

The proposals would see 1000 homes built on the environmentally sensitive land.

The Green MSP for Glasgow, Patrick Harvie slammed the “climate-wrecking” plans.

He said: “These car-centric proposals would lead to even more gridlock and toxic air on Blackhill Road and Maryhill Road, increase the risk of flooding to local homes and threaten vital protected natural areas.

“They also propose tearing-up the city’s Green Belt for private profit, after the Council has declared a climate and ecological emergency, and the focus should be squarely on developing appropriate brownfield sites for housing.

“The community has voiced strong opposition to these plans which would harm their local area. Planners must recognise this development is a non-starter and throw the plans out.

Local MP, Patrick Grady, added his voice to objections, saying the proposals went against the council’s own guidelines.

He said: “This development would require the release of significant area of greenbelt.

“This is contrary to the city’s Strategic Development Plan which is supposed to encourage the reuse of brownfield land as opposed to opening up new greenfield sites on the outskirts of the city.”

He added: “I am concerned about the ability of Glasgow City Council and other agencies and consultees to properly assess the planning application in the absence of a feasibility study.”

COPS are probing a car robbery near Gilshochill train station.

A thug robbed a 41-year-old man in his car on Cadder Road at 6.40pm yesterday.
