Go-ahead for East End venue

- BY DREW SANDELANDS

AMUSIC and events venue can be built on vacant land near Celtic Park as part of redevelopment plans in the East End. Glasgow City Council has granted permission for a “multi-disciplinary arts and events centre” on a site next to London Road.

Developers say the venue could host events such as live music, corporate dinners, weddings and fashion shows.

Steel containers will be converted into hot food takeaways outlets, with covered seating, to serve visitors to the centre.

A planning report, submitted on behalf of applicant Dalriada Developments, states: “In recent years all the housing, industrial and commercial buildings surrounding the site have been demolished as part of the continuing redevelopment of this part of the East End of Glasgow, with major development works following on from both the Commonwealth Games and the redevelopment of Celtic Park.

“The opportunity to continue the improvement momentum is illustrated by this application and its place in providing another piece of the Glasgow East End jigsaw.”

The site is near a tunnel on the former Glasgow Central Railway line, with the section between Bridgeton and Parkhead stations maintained by the Highways Agency despite being closed for many years.

Designs for the venue show a “traditional engine shed” to be in keeping with its environment.

“The proposals are for a multi-disciplinary arts and events centre which will become one of the leading venues available for hire in the East End of Glasgow,” the planning report continues.

“There is a growing demand from the East End of Glasgow, in tandem with its regeneration, to have its own venue of the local community to enjoy and that venue to act as a social hub during the day, with spaces being offered to local groups and organisations for them to use.”

Pedestrian access will be provided off a footpath on London Road, on Dalriada Street and Kinloch Street.

The report adds: “The future inclusion of temporary ‘box type’ units would offer local retailers the opportunity to provide niche food or retail outlets.”
