Pro-independence party registered in Glasgow by activist

- BY ALISTAIR GRANT

ANEW pro-independence party has been formed in Glasgow ahead of next year’s Holyrood election. The Independence for Scotland Party (ISP), which will be based at a Glasgow address, was registered as a political party with the Electoral Commission this month.

It will be led by disability rights activist Colette Walker who announced they intend to put candidates forward in the 2021 election.

The party will put candidates forward for regional list seats in a bid to help secure a pro-independence majority in 2021 and will not be “going against the SNP”.

Ms Walker said it was a “great honour to be a founder member and leader”.

She added: “It’s been a lot of hard work. But to achieve an independent Scotland is well worth it.

“Will keep you all posted further developments.”

A recent opinion poll found the SNP are on track for a majority next year.

The YouGov survey of 1095 Scots found 54 per cent plan to give their first vote to the party in the election next spring, while 45% would pick them for the regional vote.

However, there are internal divisions over plans to achieve independence and over reforms to the Gender Recognition Act.

There have also been claims of a conspiracy against former first minister Alex Salmond, who was acquitted of sexual assault charges in March. with

Announcing the creation of the new party on social media, Ms Walker said: ““Hi guys, I am so excited to share some good news with you. A few of us have been working one establishing a new Scottish independence party since last autumn.

“And I am delighted to announce that we have been formally approved by the Electoral Commission.

“Please bear with us over the next few weeks as we navigate how to launch a new party in these times of coronavirus. And please have patience while we get our website up and running.”

She added: “Just for the record, we are not going against the SNP, we are only putting candidates forward for regional list seats, I would seriously hope Nicola and I would want a majority of Indy MSPs in Holyrood in 2021.”

Ms Walker last year ran for the SNP’s women’s convener position, but lost out in the race to Glasgow councillor Rhiannon Spear.
