Building firm’s plan to ensure safe return

- BY STEWART PATERSON

AMAJOR construction firm has launched new safe operating procedures to get ready for a return to building work. The construction industry could soon be ready to restart building sites after last week it was allowed to begin site preparations in phase one of easing lockdown.

Robertson Group, currently involved in which projects is in

Glasgow, including a hotel, and worked on converting the SEC into the Louisa Jordan hospital, has a raft of measures to ensure the safety of workers and to maintain physical distancing at work. It includes workers having to queue outside sites to get in, similar to shops.

There will be handwashing facilities on sites and more work breaks factored into the working day to enable them to be used, as well as when entering at the start of a shift.

One-way walking routes will be followed on site and shift start and end times will be staggered if needed.

Site offices will also have one-way systems and two metre distancing will be in place.

Time limits will be put on meetings that can’t be done via video.

If site tasks can’t be done by keeping two metres apart, a risk assessment has to be carried out.

Elliot Robertson, chief executive of Robertson Group, said: “We are one of only a few construction firms who have worked on crucial essential infrastructure projects during the pandemic in Scotland.

“We were honoured to have played a significant role in the delivery of the NHS Louisa Jordan hospital and that experience proved that the Safe Operating Procedures we have carefully considered and implemented could be used successfully.

“These procedures have now also been used effectively on a number of other locations across Scotland.”
