Experts to offer money advice

- BY CATHERINE HUNTER

RESIDENTS living in the North East of Glasgow are invited to attend a virtual money advice and support conference next week. As Scotland begins to embark on its Covid-19 exit strategy, interested locals and community groups across the Springburn/ Robroyston ward are able to take part in the online event on Friday, June 12.

Hosted by councillor Aileen McKenzie via Zoom, guest speakers at the event will include Tony Quinn from the Greater Easterhouse Money Advice Project (GeMap) Scotland and a member of Glasgow’s Pre-Loved Uniforms.

Ms McKenzie said: “There have been longstanding issues with people needing money advice in the North East of the city which has been exacerbated in recent months with the Covid-19 lockdown.

“Many constituents contacted me directly looking for urgent support in the form of crisis grants through the Scottish Welfare Fund.

“They simply had nowhere to turn.

“There are excellent community groups already offering money advice and other support in our area addressing existing need.

“We are all now facing new challenges during the first phase of Covid-19 recovery.

“This event brings together key organisations such as GeMap who offer a range of expert advice for money problems and Glasgow’s Pre-Loved Uniforms, who support families struggling with the costs of kids’ clothes, especially school uniform. That is a big burden every summer for local parents.

“I’m inviting any community organisation and interested local residents to share the great work and support already on offer and discuss how we can all respond to new pressures across our area.

“Zoom is a great way to meet when we can’t be together.

“Official Government figures already show 17.8% of adults in Glasgow North East constituency are ‘over-indebted’ – that means at least three months behind with important bills like rent or council tax, or their money problems are causing them extreme anxiety.

“I hope many people register for this open discussion.”
