Cash raised for Ex-Gers player

- BY EMA SABLJAK

THOUSANDS have been raised for former Rangers player Gary Stevens and his family after his threeyear-old son was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia.

The retired football hero’s son, Jack, was diagnosed with JMML two weeks ago at the age of two.

Gary and his wife Louise, who live in Perth, Australia, with their three kids, have seen a recent hit to their income.

Both are working as health professionals but with Louise unable to work and Gary having to cut down his hours to be at the hospital with their son they are worried about meeting living expenses.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the family of five by Louise’s sister, Julie, to help “keep them going”.

Julie wrote: “Jack’s treatments are going to be a long haul. He has JMML which is a very rare leukaemia. They have done the first course of chemo and are looking for a match to do a stem cell transplant.

“At this point, not a lot is clear regarding his treatment, the time it will take or the locations it will happen.

“We ask you to pray for the family and we ask you to spread the info far and wide so we can help them cope.

“Please help alleviate the financial stresses so they don’t have to have that on top the already stressful and desperate situation.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love and support.”

At the time of writing, nearly $30,000 (£23,686) had been raised for the family.

Everton FC said they had been in contact with Gary who is “taking things one day at a time” at the moment.

Stevens transferred from Everton to the Ibrox team in the summer of 1988, and many Rangers’ fans have taken to social media to express support for his family during this difficult time.

To support the fundraiser, you can search for “The Stevens Family” on gofundme.com.
