Break-in heartbreak for elderly couple

- BY RUTH SUTER

AN elderly couple in the Knightswood area have been left “devastated” after callous thieves “ransacked” their home in broad daylight.

The reckless thieves let themselves into the pensioners’ home on Great Western Road on Friday afternoon.

It’s understood the elderly couple who reside at the property had been at their local supermarket shopping for groceries when the break-in took place.

It has been alleged that the culprits made off with sovereign coins and watches of “great sentimental value” after they “ransacked” the couple’s home.

Locals in the Knightswood area are now warning one another to remain vigilant.

High Knightswood and Anniesland Community Council has made a public appeal for locals to get in touch with the police if they become aware of the stolen items being sold in the area.

A Facebook post reads: “We have been informed of an elderly couple whose home was broken into on Great Western Road, Knightswood, yesterday afternoon while he was out shopping.

“They ransacked the place leaving an absolute mess. The couple are devastated.

“They took sovereign coins and watches of great sentimental value.

“If you hear of anyone who is trying to sell these, please call the police. And look out for anyone acting suspiciously, they did this in broad daylight.”

Floods of comments from angry and shocked locals have been left on the post.

One person is now warning elders in the area to lock their doors even when they are at home.

She said: “Please say to any older neighbours to be very vigilant in area also to lock doors at all times when inside house.

“Terrible that someone has done this.”

Police Scotland has confirmed that inquiries are still ongoing as they hunt for those responsible.

A spokeswoman said: “Police were called around 5.50pm on Friday, 5 June, following the report of a break-in to a property on Great Western Road, Glasgow.

“Inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.”
