Thug scarred man’s face in brutal attack

- BY CONNOR GORDON

ATHUG who scarred a man for life in a brutal nightclub knife assault was jailed on Wednesday for 27 months. Steven Gordon, 32, struck Ian Pugh with the blade at Glasgow city centre’s Savoy nightclub last August.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Mr Pugh and a friend of Gordon had earlier got into an argument in the toilets.

Gordon later approached Mr Pugh and said: “You aren’t so hard now that I have my friends with me.”

The pair got into an argument which was interrupted by a group of women.

Prosecutor Adele Macdonald said: “The accused was able to move round them and strike Mr Pugh to the left side of his face with a knife.”

Gordon quickly fled the while a 999 call was made.

The knife was later recovered by officers at the nightclub.

Mr Pugh was taken to hospital for treatment to a wound on his face.

Miss Macdonald added: “This has left a permanent scar from his ear to his lip.”

Gordon handed himself in before pleading guilty on Wednesday to the assault to Mr Pugh’s severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Lawyer, Ian Sievwright, defending, said Gordon, a car valeter, suffered a brain injury from an assault which has effected his decision making.

Mr Sievwright also told the court the dad-of-one has previous scene convictions for drugs, road traffic matters, dishonesty and domestic assault.

Sheriff Joan Kerr told Gordon: “You have pleaded guilty to an extremely violent act.

“You used a knife in a nightclub and inflicted a serious injury that left the victim with a long and visible scar as a result of your actions.

“You have previous convictions for possession of a knife and were involved in serious crime in the past. This was the most serious matter due to the violence you committed.

“Community orders have done nothing to deter you from acting in this way and leads me to the conclusion that the only suitable disposal is a custodial sentence.”
