Another £100,000 for Govan projects

- BY CATRIONA STEWART

MORE community groups in Govan have been given a cash lifeline of £100,000 to help defeat coronavirus.

Hardworking organisations – many performing a vital role – have been given the money to deliver assistance in various ways to local people whose lives have been thrown into chaos by the health emergency.

It brings to £200,000 the amount of money handed out within the past two months as the community copes with the pandemic.

The money has come from the Scottish Government and is distributed by the recently set-up Covid-19 Temporary Emergency Funding Group, which applied for government funding and was suc- cessful in securing the £200,000.

The group is made up of Linthouse, Govan and Elderpark Housing Associations and regeneration group Govan Thriving Place, along with the four councillors from the Govan ward who sit on Glasgow City Council.

A spokeswoman for the Covid-19 Temporary Emergency Funding Group said: “We have moved very quickly to deal with the significant effects the pandemic has had on our community

“Many local groups are doing an incredible job in helping people and this money is now getting to where it is needed most.”

In June, the group handed out the first £100,000 from the Scottish Government’s Supporting Communities Fund.

It has now delivered on its promise to quickly distribute the remaining £100,000.

Key highlights of the second round of work include the purchase of 175 grocery boxes to be delivered to residents in the areas of Kinning Park, Plantation and Cessnock by the Kinning Park Complex.

There was also a link-up with the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice to prepare hot food at the hospice which the Salvation Army and others distribute across Govan.

A scheme by Glasgow Life to deliver a G51 Online Learning Initiative for adult learners benefitted from the cash, as well as the GEL Project, named for three housing associations and aimed at improving health and wealth locally.

The cash also helped to fund a significant digital programme from Govan Housing Association to tackle digital exclusion.
