Celtic caught cold yet again

After conceding within a few minutes against Lyon, Celtic manager Neil Lennon will have asked his men to be extra vigilant early on against the potent PSG attack, but they were undone even sooner on this occasion.

Ok, the level of opposition has to be taken into account, but the Celtic manager (below) would have been tearing what is left of his hair out when his team conceded a soft third goal just after the restart when they had fought to gain a foothold in the match.

He will be keen to ensure that the slow starts don’t become a habit when the competitive action kicks off next week.

Goalkeeping questions arise again

Scott Bain has proven himself to be a capable goalkeeper, and has rarely let Celtic down when called upon, but he would have been disappointed here as Ander Herrera’s effort skidded off his boot and into the net for PSG’s third goal.

Whether a Fraser Forster or a David Marshall would have limited the damage to the scoreline here against PSG is debatable, but Bain’s error drew into focus the need to strengthen in the goalkeeping department.

McGregor an able deputy, but Brown’s always a miss

With skipper Brown absent due to a knock sustained in training, Celtic fans were given a glimpse of heir apparent McGregor taking over the armband for the night, and while it wasn’t his best game, he didn’t look out of place in his leadership role.

That’s not to say that Brown’s calming influence wasn’t missed in the midfield, but McGregor’s growing sway within the dressing room has been remarked upon by his manager and by Brown himself in recent times, and it may not be too long before he takes over those duties on a full-time basis. He seems the perfect candidate when Brown eventually hangs up his boots.
