Christie tips son for bigger things

- MARK HENDRY

CHARLIE CHRISTIE believes ambitious son Ryan will be attracting attention from clubs in the English Premier League – but he’s currently loving life at Celtic.

The playmaker has been one of the first names on Neil Lennon’s team sheet and has paid the manager back with some top performances both domestically and in Europe. A terrific 20 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions last season before the shutdown, the 25-yearold attacking midfielder was performing out his skin.

Which is why Christie snr reckons his boy will be on the radar of scouts from the top clubs in the top league down south.

The Parkhead club are desperate to keep hold of their prized asset, though, and it is understood he has been offered a new deal at the club. But that doesn’t mean he’ll be a Celtic player his whole career.

His dad pointed to other Scottish lads who have impressed in the EPL and believes his son can also do the business. “Ryan is very ambitious and he loves playing for Celtic,” Christie snr said.

“But I have no doubt there will be other clubs looking at him. To score 20 goals from midfield by March, it would be mad for scouts not to have him on their radar, and I mean at the very top level.

“I would temper that by saying that he’s having the time of his life at Celtic. He’s got a nice flat in a nice area of Glasgow and he says there’s a real bond in the changing room and he’s very close friends with a lot of guys in there.

“I think Ryan could play at that level, there are a lot of Celtic players who could. They have an abundance of talent. We watch the English Premiership and see how John McGinn has thrived, how Stuart Armstrong is doing so well. I just don’t think we give our players enough credit.”
