Gers fans raise thousands for ex-star Nisbet

- BY JACK HAUGH

MORE than £5000 has been raised by generous Rangers fans to support a former player undergoing life-saving surgery for cancer.

Scott Nisbet revealed last month he is to have an operation to remove one of his kidneys after four tumours were found by medics.

The discovery was made after he complained about a bad back and was referred to hospital.

Following the revelation, a fundraiser was set up by The Rangers Former Players Benevolent Club to support the family of the former Scotland youth internationalist.

The JustGiving page closed yesterday having raised £5533, smashing its original target of £2000.

In an update posted by Colin Stewart, Rangers Youth Development co. director and Rangers Former Players Charity trustee, the 52-year-old thanked fans for their support.

“So far so good and getting there with this one,” he said in an online video. “A bit tender but getting better every day and stronger every day.

“I am looking forward to going back [to hospital] on the 28th of this month to deal with the other two tumours and ready to get going again.

“Very sad this weekend to hear about Tom Forsyth. I met him when I was 12 years old and he was a gentleman.

“The loss of David been very sad as well.

“I was sent a card from Stevie G (Gerrard) and all the first team boys and that has really cheered me up.

“Thank you very much for that. “Stevie G... you get to 55 and I’ll make sure I get to 55.”

Former player Ally McCoist has been among those to share his support for the fundraiser.

He wrote online: “We are all right behind you Scott Nisbet, an integral part of the squad and great friend to us all – everyone is thinking of you big man, we wish you every success and good health.

“PS... Donation made to the fundraiser to support Scott and his family.”

The former defender played for the Ibrox club between 1985 and 1993 after joining them as a kid.

He made his debut under legendary Gers boss Jock Wallace as a teenager, before having to retire early due to injury.
