Group in respect plea for Quarriers child graveyard

- BY EMA SABLJAK

HUNDREDS of children that for years laid in unmarked drives have still not received the respect they deserve, a campaign group has claimed.

More than 150 grave markers were reinstated in a graveyard by the Quarriers children’s home in Renfrewshire last year following a two-year-long campaign.

However, pleas to add additional names to the plaque and to remove graffiti has been postponed for months.

But Sandy Smith and Jayne Savery, former residents of the home, who started the Quarriers Warriors campaign, say they want to see “promised” work finished.

Sandy added that the graveyard needs springs in the gate to stop people from wandering in after dogs were seen defecating in the cemetery and bags of rubbish were collected.

Sandy said: “One night Jayne and me saw a woman with a dog and it was doing its needs in the graveyard.

“It is not fair would in their with a dog?”

He added: “The young ones seem to be treating it as a drinking den. There’s an awful lot of Buckfast bottles around.

“All they need to do is put a sign up stating ‘no dogs allowed’ and put a spring in the gate.”

Sandy claims that it was supposed to be finished shortly after the remembrance service in September 2019 and the campaigners have been left “raging”. for the kids. Who right mind go in

He added: “They gave us their word in October that the work would be starting. They had from October to March to get the work done.”

Quarriers claimed that the work was postponed due to the pandemic. Dr Ron Culley, chief executive of Quarriers said: “Following the Service of Remembrance arranged by Quarriers in September 2019 to mark the installation of the headstones, we started the process of finding a supplier to add additional names to the plaque and to remove graffiti.

“This work was due to start from

April 2020 and unfortunately had to be put on hold due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Now that we are in Phase 3 of the coronavirus lockdown easing, we are in the process of rearranging this work.

“Given lockdown restrictions however, we do not have a definitive timescale at this stage.

“We remain committed to adding the names to the plaque and removing the graffiti.

“Once work on the plaque is complete, we will consider additional items such as signage, gate springs and Perspex.”
