Why this paper is backing local business – and why you need to support us too

We need to stick together to get through the virus crisis

- COMMENT BY TOM MCCONIGLEY GROUP EDITOR

WE all know somebody who owns, runs or works in a local business. They are the lifeblood of our towns, the beating heart of the villages we serve. That’s why we believe it’s so important that everybody in our communities now rallies round our friends and colleagues who need our support.

Whether it’s the butcher on the high street, the B&B which encourages vital tourism income or the dance studio about to open up again after months of being forced to shut – we call on our readers today to support them. Because they are what keeps us all going.

Take a look at the businesses we’ve profiled today and consider giving them your support. Take a look at the three pages of FREE listings we’ve offered to small enterprises. Need a new carpet? Need a beautician? Today, we’re showing you where to find them.

But it’s not just local businesses who need your support in the era of Covid-19.

Your local newspaper has suffered as well. Shops closed for months. Our usual readers were afraid to leave the house and our deliveries were halted.

The advertising market froze too – and we depend on that revenue to survive.

Now more than ever, your local newspapers like this one need your support. Without our readers we are nothing, but without your local newspapers, our towns and villages would miss out on key information and a reliable source of news.

We are committed to bringing you the latest news from up and down our circulation area and this pandemic has shown the good and the great within the local areas we love to write about.

And that’s not all we’re doing. We’re constantly innovating and coming up with new ways to tell the news and will continue to do so – with your support and backing.

Over the course of many years, this paper will cover your child’s birth, their first day at school and their graduation.

The stories of the people who live in our communities have been told in our pages for decades – and will be told right here for decades to come. As lockdown continues to ease and we return to some sort of normality, we are continuing to work around the clock to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information, as well as all the inspiring tales that have become synonymous with this title. Throughout the years, we have faced many challenges, but if we all stick together and support local businesses, including your local paper, then we will come through this stronger than ever.
