Boost for childrens’ community garden

- BY CAROLINE WILSON

APROJECT in the north of Glasgow that teaches children how to grow and cook vegetables has been granted thousands of pounds to expand its work.

BBC Children in Need has awarded £ 40,000 to two local projects working with disadvantaged children and young people in the city.

The North Glasgow Community Food Initiative has been awarded a three- year grant of £ 30,000 to deliver weekly outdoor sessions in Milton Community Gardens.

The sessions will give the children the opportunity to play outside in the garden, whilst also learning about growing, cooking and eating homegrown produce.

It is hoped they will also help to develop confidence and self- esteem.

The project was awarded funding earlier this year by the Scottish Government to provide emergency food parcels and children’s activity packs during the pandemic lockdown.

Tracy Galloway, Youth Gardener at North Glasgow Community Food Initiative, said: “We’re delighted that we have been awarded with this funding from BBC Children in Need which will enable us to continue our community garden project with children in our local area for the next three years.”

Another Glasgow project Hear My Music will use a grant of £ 10,000 to deliver small group and individual after- school music sessions to children and young people who have autism.

Florence Burke, National Head of Scotland at BBC Children in Need, said: “We’re so pleased to have been able to award Hear My Music and

North Glasgow Community Food Initiative with this funding. At a time of so many additional challenges for so many families, this grant demonstrates how important it is that we’re able to continue to support positive changes in local children and young people’s lives.”

Across Glasgow, BBC Children in Need is currently funding 69 projects to a value of more than £ 4.5million.
