Alleged rioters are to stand trial next year
ELEVEN PEOPLE are to stand trial accused of being involved in an a l le g e d r el i g i o u s ly aggravated riot. David McSherry, 31, Liam McMillan, 21, Steven Frew, 30, Elizabeth Dalziel, 58, Fiona Douglas, 39, Steven McVey, 30, Barry Angus, 28, Derek Keith, 25, Stephen Keith, 23, William Duncan, 35, and Marc Cumming, 22, are all said to have formed part of a disorderly crowd in Govan on August 30 last year.
It is alleged they shouted, swore and refused to comply with police instructions in a number of streets.
The charge states the group obstructed officers by throwing missiles as well as forming barricades using furniture, wood and road signs.
It is further claimed they started a fire by setting items alight before gesturing to police officers on duty.
Prosecutors claim they opened the rear of a cell van and surrounded officers before shouting and kicking the vehicle.
It is alleged a bottle was brandished and an officer was hit on the head with a bin.
The charge states the group struggled with police and attempted to remove their batons as well as punching and kicking out at them.
It is lastly stated that the group charged towards people, uttered threats of violence and blocked traffic.
The offence is said to have been aggravated by religious prejudice.
The group pleaded not guilty at three separate hearings yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court, on Carlton Place.
Three trials were set by Sheriff Martin Jones QC for April next year.
