CITY LOCKDOWN WILL CONTINUE

Glasgow’s restrictions in place for at least another week

- BY STEWART PATERSON

LOCKDOWN restrictions on household visits in Glasgow are to continue for at least another week. The First Minister said they will be in place “for as long as they are needed”.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed there were 91 new cases in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board in the past 24 hours.

The restrictions remain the same. You should not host others in your home or visit others, even if their home is outside the restricted areas.

Visiting care homes is restricted to outdoor visits only and hospital visits are restricted to essential visits only.

Sturgeon said it was in response to a “worrying increase” in positive cases.

The restrictions were put in place one week ago after cases were rising in the city.

They were applied to Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire.

On Monday that was extended to East Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire as cases continue to rise, causing concern among public health officials.

Sturgeon said: “The restrictions will be reviewed again next week and they will stay in place for as long as they are needed but they will not stay in place for any longer than that.”

Prior to the announcement last week there had been 260 new positive cases in the area in one week – and 174 of those were reported in the three days before.

In the week since the restrictions were re- imposed there have been 516 positive cases across the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area.

The Greater Glasgow cases account for almost half of all cases in Scotland with 1065 cases reported across the country in the last week.

The latest statistics showed 176 new cases across Scotland.

There were 267 people in hospital and six in intensive care.

There have been three deaths in the past 24 hours.

Sturgeon said it was the first occasion since June 30 that she had announced three deaths in a single day.

The First Minister said: “This reminds us of the impact that the virus has had, and continues to have. But most of all of course, that figure speaks of three individual tragedies.

“I want to send my condolences to those who are grieving as a result of the deaths reported today, and to everyone who has lost a loved one during this pandemic.”

On extending the restrictions, she said: “The Scottish Government’s Resilience Committee met late yesterday afternoon to discuss the restrictions which were put in place a week ago today in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire.

“We considered a report from the Incident Management Team, and consulted the representatives of the local authorities affected.

“Having assessed the latest information about new cases, and assessed advice from our senior clinical advisors, the Scottish Government decided yesterday that existing restrictions must remain in place for these three local authority areas.

“We also concluded – on the evidence presented – that the restrictions should also be extended to cover two other local authority areas in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board region and those two additional council areas were Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire, both of these areas recorded a high number of new cases in the past week.”
