“This cobbled together [ Czech] team, filled with players who would normally be nowhere near the national team, gave Scotland so many problems. It was frightening.

“If you want cheerleading, go somewhere else. Let’s be frank, that was worrying for Scotland. The way they defended, the way they played, the amount of chances they allowed.”

“We will struggle if we perform like that against Israel, particularly defensively, and also if we get through and come up against Norway.

“We need to improve on that enormously, not just a little bit. It might mean a change of personnel if Steve’s going to stick with the shape.

“The biggest question is, are we prepared for the play- off? I would say not yet.

“There are a lot of questions that need answered. Does he know his shape? Well, maybe, but if it is this shape we could struggle.

“You can see he’s been tinkering, you can see he’s been trying to work the back three and see who’s better in that back three, see if [ Andy] Robertson can work at wing- back because he wants [ Kieran] Tierney in the team as well. But there are too many questions to be answered.

“Listen, everything’s a gamble but it’s a huge gamble going into this Israel play- off if we go with this shape and we play in this manner.”
