Thugs jailed over ambush assault on homeless man

TWO THUGS who ambushed a sleeping homeless man have been jailed for more than 15 months. James McCreadie and Cameron Dixon pounced on Graham Martin at a Glasgow city centre bus shelter in February this year.

The attackers – aged 30 and 37 – punched and kicked the 34- yearold leaving him with a bleeding eye wound. The pair pleaded guilty to the assault to Mr Martin’s injury.

The court heard Mr Martin was sleeping rough at a bus shelter in the city’s Trongate.

Prosecutor Adele MacDonald said: “McCreadie kicked Mr Martin on the head twice causing his head to strike off the side of the bus shelter. Dixon slapped Mr Martin on the face and kicked him once before both left.”

There is no alternative to a custodial sentence

Police officers later found Mr Martin bleeding from his eye and vomiting and called an ambulance.

He was treated at Glasgow Royal Infirmary for a one- inch wound to his eye and was released.

Mr Martin told officers he had a row with Mr McCreadie earlier that day.

The attackers were traced by Mr Martin’s description as well as CCTV of the incident and they were arrested.

Des Ziolo, defending McCreadie, said: “There was an issue between the pair of them and he lost his temper and he regrets that.”

Stephen Bentley, defending Dixon, told the court he is currently serving a sentence with a release date next May.

Sheriff Alayne Swanson said: “In view of the background, the record and he narrative, there is no alternative to a custodial sentence in relation to this offence.”

McCreadie was sentenced to 58 weeks behind bars while Dixon will serve his 48 weeks alongside his current sentence.
