Science Centre is back

- BY HEATHER CARRICK

THE Glasgow Science Centre will reopen i t s d o o r s t h i s weekend, after a six- month hiatus. The iconic Glasgow visitor attraction will welcome crowds tomorrow for the first time since closing on March 17 as the country went into lockdown.

Glasgow Science Centre CEO, Stephen Breslin, revealed new measures which will allow visitors to safely take in the exhibitions.

He said: “It has been a long six months, and we couldn’t be more delighted to open our doors to the public again.

“During the closure, we have been busy with projects behind the scenes and working incredibly hard.

“Walking around the centre with no one in it, it felt very empty and like a ghost town – it was not a nice feeling.

“So we are very much looking forward to people back in.”

The Science Centre will reopen on time for the October break, despite school kids of Glasgow missing out on a summer of discovery.

Stephen said: “We have had to cap the number of visitors at any one time to around 500. Normally on a busy Saturday in October, we would see 1500 visitors.

“While we aren’t able to let as many people in, it means that we can make sure the exhibits are safe as they are not being crowded at any one time.”

Other safety measures in the centre include social distancing, mandatory masks or face coverings, extensive, regular cleaning in all areas and increase in staff to accommodate a safe floor.

The centre will open their ‘ Idea No. 59’ exhibit upon reopening, an exhibit which was originally planned to open on March 18.

Stephen said: welcoming

“Idea No. 59 is an exhibit which focuses on innovation and creativity.

“It covers a range of topic and shows examples from healthcare to working life.

“It is a great exhibition and we are hoping that it inspires visitors to be a part of it.”

Glasgow Science Centre has already seen a huge demand for tickets upon opening up their box office, and has asked for visitors to take advantage of the booking system when planning to attend.

Stephen said: “The ticket demand has been very strong so far since opening our box office on Monday.

“Within a few hours of opening the box office, we had sold almost 1700 tickets. We are happy to see so many people excited to come back to the centre.

“Although the whole city had effectively shut down for a few months, everything is slowly reopening – we’re glad to finally do this too.”
