Parents dig in to help provide kids with more space

Green- thumb mums help make safe and friendly space

- BY MAXINE MCARTHUR

PROUD parents have pulled on their gloves and shown off their green thumb to help set up outdoor learning space for their children.

During the Covid- 19 pandemic, pupils throughout Glasgow City Council have taken their classes outside in a bid to reduce the spread of the virus.

However, not all schools have been equipped with the outdoor space required for little ones.

That’s where the parents have stepped in.

While Cleeves Primary School in Priesthill already makes use of the large hillside on the grounds, some areas were in need of extra care.

Mums have offered their help to transform overgrown parts of the playground into an expanded outdoor classroom.

Parents Stacey Sutherland and Leanne McGarvey cleared part of the outdoor classroom to make more room for pupils to learn.

Primary one youngsters Charlotte Fraser, Kuba Krazek and Lola Borland joined in with deputy head teacher Mrs McCallum to lend a hand.

Head teacher Hazel Sim said: “We were delighted to welcome a couple of our parents to work on clearing and tidying areas of our hill at Cleeves Primary.

“Parents Stacey Sutherland and Leanne McGarvey started at our outdoor classroom clearing the overgrown parts to make more room for outdoor learning opportunities ... what a difference they have made already.

“We have more work to be done and will be asking for more volunteers to help us out.

“We are so lucky to have such fabulous grounds, but we need help and support to maintain them.”

Councillor Chris Cunningham, city convener for education, skills and early years, has encouraged parents and carers to get involved with their child’s school.

He said: “This is a lovely way for parents to get involved with the school during these uncertain and strange times – but our parents and carers are crucial elements of our school communities.

“Thanks to all parents for their dedication and commitment to supporting their schools.”
