Plans for additional beer garden space

- BY EMA SABLJAK

APOPULAR city venue has applied for permission to expand its beer garden into a private car park. Plans submitted to Glasgow City Council could see car- parking space by the Rotunda transformed into a “robust” outdoor wining and dining area made from a metal shipping container.

Earlier this year, the owners of the Rotunda unveiled Cranside Kitchen, a new outdoor venue with a food market and beer garden.

The current beer garden opened to punters in July.

But the planning application raised concerns about the suitability of the current tented structure to poorer weather.

The refurbished metal shipping container used for the new outdoor venue will pay homage to the historic and industrial shipping heritage of the area.

The planning statement adds: “In selecting a container for this purpose, the designer has sought to reflect the bold industrial brickwork construction of the Victorian Rotunda and to carry that industrial theme through into the beer garden by installing a latter- day item of industrial design, creating a marriage between the area’s space industrial shipping past and modern- day shipping container.”

The planning application added that the Rotunda had an extensive car- parking area, which provides an excess of space needed for the existing restaurant.

Two large pergola structures will help provide weather protection for the garden, and heaters will also be added to help punters enjoy the space even on colder days.

Furniture in the outdoor space will reflect a “garden” theme with planters containing small trees and shrub to help separate walkways.

The floor will also be overlaid a with astroturf, and it is expected to open between 10am and 10pm seven days a week.

The dining area will comply with Covid- 19 measures.

It is thought coronavirus restrictions will continue to impact the venue long- term, and the planning statement continued: “The design and layout is such as to comply with all the necessary social distancing regulations while at the same time offering an appealing and attractive outdoor experience which will contribute to the range of attractions on the site and surrounding areas.”
