Craig keen to follow in hero’s footsteps

- MARK WOODS

ADAM Craig has no fear of being in the limelight. The 25- year- old’s half- marathon debut arrived on the Antrim coast last month with Sir Mo Farah adding a touch of star quality to the affair.

In awe of the Olympic legend, the Scot couldn’t resist a bit of banter en route to the start. “Stick around for a minute, so I can get some TV time,” he jested. It got a laugh from the current European record holder and a moment to remember on a day in which Farah was a class above and Craig survived to come eighth in a respectable time of 63 minutes 24 seconds.

“It was a bit surreal,” Craig asmits. “I’ve never met him before but I guess you paint this picture in your head of what these guys are. We’re walking to the start line, he’s walking beside me, and he’s just one of the guys. It was almost just a bit strange really to know what he’s done: four- time Olympic champion. It was quite humbling, I think.”

The Borderer will today pull on a British vest in the world half- marathon championships in Gdynia.

With Callum Hawkins among those vacating a berth, Craig answered a call for a show of interest and it paid off with a first international call- up.

“It’s a great environment,” he says. “I’ve gone full- time and thrown all my eggs in the basket to hopefully get to the point where I start making some money from it. But we’re very lucky in the team that we get to live in the house and the main expenses are taken care of by New Balance.”
