Council to allocate £ 1.09m to town centres

MORE than £ 1 million will be invested throughout Glasgow’s town centres to help improve shop fronts and open spaces throughout the city.

The Scottish Government has allocated £ 1.096m additional investment towards Town Centre renewal for 2020/ 21 which is to be administer­ed through Glasgow City Council who will in partnershi­p to deliver these objectives.

The city administra­tion committee has agreed that an upper limit of £ 400,000 is recommende­d to allow the continuati­on and potential expansion of the shopfront improvemen­t works, £ 250,000 will be awarded to meet increased capital costs for works at the Tollcross Glasshouse refurbishm­ent project and £ 225,000 will fund food support and inclusion within town centres

A further £ 221,000 has been set aside to allow work to be carried out which will expand the Spaces for People provision within town centres. A report was brought before committee on Thursday.

Councillor Kenny McLean said: “This funding is part of the Scottish Government’s Covid- 19 stimulus programme. The funding must be committed by September 2021. The Scottish Government require confirmati­on by November this year that the council can spend this money.

“The 2020/ 21 funding will have an additional element which relates purely to the Covid- 19 response.”

Councillor Jon Molyneux said that certain areas of the city would need funding more than others. He highlighte­d areas that should be benefit from financial support.

He said: “I would also like to put on record that the Albert Cross and Albert Drive location would benefit from town centre funding as it has suffered badly in the last 12 months from coronaviru­s.”

Following the discussion members approved the report.
