NEW LOCKDOWN

City to be in second- highest level of tiered virus restrictions

- BY STEWART PATERSON

THE restrictions of the new five- tiered approach to lockdown have been revealed. Glasgow is expected put into Level Three – highest tier.

The rules are broadly similar to those that currently apply across the central belt.

The new system comes into force from next Monday.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that the ambition was to get the whole country to Level One or Zero.

She announced the levels as she revealed there had been another 25 deaths registered in the past 24 hours of people who had tested positive for Covid- 19 in the past 28 days.

There were also 1100 people in hospital with the virus.

Sturgeon said: “I think it is worth noting that for those who think we are being too tough with the restrictions right now, the number in hospital right now is just 400 short of the number of hospitalisations at the April peak.”

The First Minister said areas currently under the highest restrictions, including Glasgow, will be in Level Three when the new system comes into force.

For Level Three, there will remain a range of restrictions across sectors.

There will be no visiting other people’s homes and a maximum of six people from two households can meet outdoors and in public places such as hospitality venues.

For hospitality, the sale of alcohol will be banned – but there will be a change to which businesses can open. All premises will be allowed to open for food and non- alcoholic drinks.

Sturgeon said cafes, restaurants and bars can all open until 6pm under the new Level Three restrictions. to the be second

Takeaways will be permitted for alcohol and food as they are now.

There should be no non- essential travel into or out of the Level Three area, with exemptions for essential travel – such as for work, education, shopping and travelling through restricted areas.

People should still avoid car- sharing with anyone outside their household or extended household whenever possible.

Non- essential use of public transport should be avoided, and face coverings will be compulsory on public transport.

Close- contact services such as hair salons and beauticians can open but with protective measures, while mobile services will still not be permitted.

The ban on spectators at stadiums and events including football matches will remain.

Churches and other places of worship can open but with a maximum of 50 people.

Weddings, civil partnerships, funerals, wakes and receptions are permitted also with a 20- person limit.

The First Minister said that schools will remain open under any level of lockdown.

Colleges and universities operate with restrictions blended learning.

The rules for sport and exercise remain the same for Glasgow.

For indoors, only individual exercise is allowed, with exemptions for under- 18s.

For outdoors, exercise and professional sport will be allowed, but with restrictions on adult contact sports.

Office- based workers will still be required to work from home if possible.

The daily update showed there were another 1327 positive tested cases.

There were 1100 people in hospital with coronavirus, 82 of which were in intensive care. will and
