Fury over dog dirt on streets in East End

- BY LAUREN GILMOUR

DENNISTOUN residents have hit out at the amount of dog dirt that has been lining the streets in the area. People across the East End community have joined together to condemn irresponsible dog owners who allow their pets to foul in the street and do not clean up after them.

Leanne Lloyd, who lives in the area, occasionally looks after a family member’s dog and always picks up the mess.

She said: “I can’t understand how dog owners can be so inconsiderate in taking their dogs out or worse still letting it roam free and not picking up after them.

“What really confuses me further though are the owners who bag to mess and then don’t dispose of it properly and just leave it lying.”

Residents have claimed the problem is particularly bad around the Garfield Street and Reidvale Street area.

One local resident said: “It’s an absolute disgrace you need to look at the ground as you walk for fear of stepping in it.”

There are also safety concerns about the level of dog faeces on the streets and in public areas. If touched, dog faeces can potentially cause Toxocariasis which may cause blindness in humans.

Lorraine Barnes who also lives in the area, said: “If you’ve had the misfortune of stepping in it, having to clean it off shoes is disgusting or what if a toddler fell and it’s on their hands?”

Local Councillor for Dennistoun Allan Casey criticised dog owners who do not pick up after their pooches.

He said:

“I am disappointed to hear that there are dog owners who still aren’t picking up their dog mess behind them.

“This is a blight in our community and I would urge people to please pick up the mess after your dog.”

“I urge anyone who witnesses dog fouling to report it to Glasgow City Council.”

Guidelines from Glasgow City Council say: “Dog fouling in a public place is when an owner fails to remove their dog’s mess.

“If your dog fouls in an space, you must clean it up.

“We provide litter and dog waste bins in many parks and public spaces.

“You can also waste in your

( green) bin.

Dog fouling can be reported through the My Glasgow App, the council’s website, or by calling 0300 343 7027. open put bagged dog domestic refuse
