Parks set to receive environmental cash
AN ENVIRONMENTAL project has secured funding for improvements to Pollokshaws. Pollokshaws After School Service ( Pass) has been given funding from walking and cycling charity Sustrans as part of the “Spaces for People” scheme.
The money will go towards the “Connecting Pollokshaws” project, which aims to transform the streets, paths, parks and greenspaces in Pollokshaws to create a sustainable and people and cyclefriendly neighbourhood.
Pass manager Robert McKinnon said: “I am delighted to act as the client on this fantastic project.
“Improving our local green spaces and encouraging active travel is vital to the health and wellbeing of the community and I believe this project will deliver significant benefits to the children and families of Pollokshaws and beyond.”
Areas marked for improvement include Ashtree Park and Shawhill Park, which has suffered from vandalism and neglect in the past.
Councillor Kyle Thornton said: “It is fantastic to see Ashtree Park and Shawhill Park receiving investment and my thanks go to all of those who have worked hard to secure these funds.
“Residents have often told me of their desire to see their local parks and environment improved, and hopefully this project will help fulfil this desire.
“I’d encourage anyone who is interested to get involved in the project to help ensure we use these funds in the best way for the community.”
The project has also been working closely with pupils at nearby St Conval’s Primary School to keep kids engaged with plans.
Dan Jeffs, infrastructure officer at Sustrans, said: “We’re really excited here at Sustrans to be supporting a project with such a positive energy and vision.
“As it’s being driven by the local community and in particular the local primary school children, it fits perfectly into our ambition of creating happier and healthier places for everyone.”
A public consultation is now under way for local residents to make their voice heard.
