‘ Relief’ as planning application refused
AGORBALS ho u s i n g association has spoken of its joy after a planning application for a function suite in the South Side was refused.
New Gorbals Housing Association said it was “relieved” that the planning application at 135 Moffat Street was denied following objections from themselves as well as local councillors and residents.
A planning application had been filed in March with the intentions of creating a “community hall and multi- function events facility” in the site of a former furniture showroom.
In the submission, the housing association objected on grounds of parking issues, traffic and concerns over noise pollution in the area, describing the expected disruption to have a “significant” impact on nearby residential properties and care facilities.
The planning application was refused by Glasgow City Council on November 2.
A spokesperson for New Gorbals Housing Association said: “While we recognise the need for more community spaces in the Gorbals, this site is not the answer.
“Parties already held there have caused disruption and distress to people who live in the surrounding homes, including residents in nearby care facilities.
“A venue here would cause issues locally with parking, traffic, noise, and antisocial behaviour, and overall would have a negative impact on the health and quality of life of residents.
“We are relieved, on their behalf, that this application has been rejected by Glasgow City Council.”
Local councillor Soryia Saddique who also filed an objection to the planning application, said: “Concerns were raised regarding antisocial behaviour, traffic management issues and car parking concerns which were raised with the council.
“Community voice is paramount in the decision- making process.”
