DRIVER STOPPED AT RED LIGHT DURING COP CHASE

- BY CONNOR GORDON

ADRIVER who bizarrely stopped at a red light while being chased by police was later caught with a machete in his car.

Andrew Fenton was stopped in his Volkswagen Polo in Glasgow’s Whiteinch in July this year.

The 35-year-old had mounted kerbs and spun 90 degrees on a broken wheel rim during the 1.3-mile pursuit.

Fenton stopped for a traffic light, but ignored calls to pull over and narrowly avoided a collision with a police car.

He pleaded guilty yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving and the unlawful possession of a machete.

Fenton also admitted failing to provide a breath test, breaching his bail and the unlawful possession of a knife.

The court heard officers were alerted by McDonald’s staff in the city’s Partick about Fenton’s intoxication at 11pm.

Fenton was seen mounting a kerb then drove on the wrong side of the road.

Prosecutor Hannah Terrance said: “The accused continued to drive, ignoring signals before stopping at a red light on Crow Road.”

An officer approached Fenton’s car and told him to pull over but he replied: “I don’t know who the f*** you are.”

Fenton sped off after the lights turned green doing 50mph in a 30mph zone.

Miss Terrance said: “The accused’s offside wheel collided with the central reservation at a roundabout causing the vehicle to spin 90 degrees.

“Fenton’s car came to a complete stop, the front tyre was deflated causing the rim to be exposed.”

Officers positioned their car in front of Fenton but he managed to swerve round “narrowly avoiding a collision.”

Fenton drove into a locked car park on Clydeholm Road where the car was eventually stopped and he was arrested.

A search of the car recovered a 27-inch machete between the driver’s seat and central console as well as opened cans of lager.

It was then discovered Fenton had breached his bail terms from April stating he was to stay indoors between 7pm and 7am.

A small lock back knife was found in the waistband of Fenton’s shorts at the police station.

Lawyer Richard Allan, defending, told the court that it was “poor decision making” by Fenton who has previous convictions for weapons.

Sentencing was deferred by Sheriff Stuart Reid for background reports until next month and Fenton had his remand continued meantime.
