Hundreds raised to help fire- hit families

- BY HAMISH MORRISON

HUNDREDS have been raised by generous G l a s we g i a n s f o r r e s i d e n t s m a d e temporar i ly homeless by a devastating fire in the East End.

A blaze in Shettleston Road displaced the residents of 15 flats affected on Friday, November 6.

Charlene Macleod set up an online fundraiser to get cash to families forced from their homes by the fire.

It has now raised £ 719, well over its initial target of £ 500.

Ms Macleod wrote: “I’m hoping and praying we can do something to help these people.

“I know times are hard enough for everyone just now, but anything at all would be helpful.”

There were no serious injuries caused by the fire but one woman was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. She has since left.

Of the people displaced by the blaze which started at around 5pm on Friday night, nine families were taken to hotels, arranged by Shettleston Housing Association ( SHA), and six households chose instead to stay with family or friends.

They were helped to collect essential items from their homes before leaving.

Tony Teasdale, the head of the East End housing association, said his team were on the scene “immediately” to help people as firefighters tackled the blaze.

A welfare station was set up around the corner at the office in Pettigrew Street for residents to take shelter and get further support from emergency services and the association’s staff.

City Building Control officers confirmed to SHA there was “no structural damage” to the building but advised it was not safe for residents to return home due to extensive smoke damage to their flats.

Mr Teasdale said the housing association was not involved in the fundraiser but that he was “pleased to see the community pulling together” to help one another.
