Driver admits killing man after running him over

-

A DRIVER admitted killing a man after ploughing into him on the opposite side of the road.

Jack Bradbury, 31, collided into Robert McLeod, 58, on the A80 near Chryston, North Lanarkshire, on November 28 2017.

Bradbury’s Mini Cooper became airborne after swerving round a van and made contact with Mr McLeod’s Volkswagen Tiguan.

Mr McLeod sustained serious head injuries and died in hospital nine days after the incident.

Bradbury pled guilty on Friday during his trial at the High Court in Glasgow to causing Mr McLeod’s death by careless driving.

He had originally been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The court heard Bradbury and exlover Sean Goncalves, 29, were heading home from a supermarket.

Mr Goncalves told the court there was “nothing unusual” about the journey they had travelled on many times before.

Prosecutor Iain McSporran QC asked when it became out of the ordinary.

Mr Goncalves said: “I just remember Jack had shouted ‘ oh my god’ and that’s when I looked up and noticed there was a white van. It was just coming out from a junction and Jack swerved to avoid the van.

“I just remember feeling a crash and after that the car was rolling

- I felt the motion of the car tumbling over. It felt like a long time.”

Mr Goncalves added that the car landed on the opposing carriageway.

Mr Goncalves stated the men in the van approached them with one apparently telling them not to say anything to the police.

Plumber, Brian O’Connor, 54, stated while in tears that his brother Anthony, 66, had performed a “safe manoeuvre” across the A80 to get onto Cumbernauld Road.

He said: “I just shouted there was going to be an impact as the car was snaking.”

Mr O’Connor then stated he later told Bradbury and Mr Goncalves not to speak as he was “concerned for the poor man”.

Mr McLeod, of Muirhead, North Lanarkshire, was recovered from his vehicle and taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but later died from his injuries. Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports. Bradbury, of the city’s Port Dundas, was banned from driving meantime and had his bail continued.
