Volunteers brave ice to offer meals

- BY RUTH SUTER

ACHARITY based in the city centre braced subzero temperatures on New Year’s Day help 100 homeless people in Glasgow. Homeless Project Scotland worked through the icy elements to serve a New Year’s Day dinner to those in need.

Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Philip Braat, was among a group of volunteers handing out hearty steak pies and haggis, neeps and tatties kindly cooked by staff at the Busby Hotel.

The Lord Provost said: “A new year, but sadly still a lot of need, so it was great to be out tonight with the Homeless Project Scotland team and many volunteers of all ages and from different stakeholders, providing meals to homeless and vulnerable individuals.”

Volunteers were also joined by Brian Gilda – the chairman and managing director of car dealership, Peoples Ford – as they handed out Irn- Bru and shortbread to the homeless and vulnerable.

Colin McInnes, co- founder of the charity, added: “It’s a privilege to have people like Brian and the Lord Provost give up their time to support us.

“We really do rely on our volunteers and supporters. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without generous donations of time and money. So we’re always grateful for any help we receive.”

Founded in October 2019, Homeless Project Scotland provides essential necessities to people across the country who are in need of help.

Throughout the Covid- 19 pandemic, volunteers have also been distributing masks, hand sanitisers and emergency items including foil blankets, hats, scarves and hand warmers to anybody sleeping rough.

In December, we told how mothers and children at “crisis point” in Glasgow have been relying on Homeless Project Scotland’s soup kitchen. Operating from underneath the Hielanman’s Umbrella, the emergency food service offers hot meals to around 150 to 200 people every Friday evening from its weekly facility.
