Accused told police that he ‘ knew nothing’

- BY GRANT MCCABE

AMAN allege d ly involved in the murder of a teenage boy claimed not to know what happened. Robert Farrell was quizzed by a police officer shortly after the incident close to Celtic Park on September 29, 2019.

The 33- year- old was still near to the scene as Liam Hendry, 18, was being treated by paramedics after being hit by a van.

Farrell was standing near co- accused Dean Wright, 32, who was separately receiving medical treatment in Barrowfield.

PC Nicola Dixon was the officer who spoke to Farrell.

She told the High Court in Glasgow yesterday: “I asked him did he know about the injured person with the Transit van.

“He said he did not know anything about that.”

Prosecutor Liam Ewing QC asked the constable: “How did he appear to you?”

She replied: “He appeared to be in shock.”

Farrell was asked about Wright, who was also lying injured.

The court heard he again claimed not to know what occurred – then said “four or five males had attacked” Wright.

PC Dixon went with Wright in an ambulance to hospital.

Mr Ewing asked her: “Mr Wright was unconscious, significantly injured and required emergency medical treatment?”

The officer said: “Yes.” PC Ian Cairns also told the trial how he spoke with Farrell at the scene.

The constable said: “He stated that he had come around the corner and that it was chaos.”

Earlier the court heard from a teenager who described himself as Liam’s

“best friend”.

Daniel Ewing said he dragged Liam’s body from the road on to the pavement before cradling him in his arms following the collision.

The two teenagers had spent the afternoon and evening together before heading back to Mr Ewing’s home on Barrowfield Place.

Three other friends joined the young men at the house and they spent the night “enjoying ourselves and carrying on drinking”.

Mr Ewing told the court he was in the bathroom when he heard shouting from outside.

When he went downstairs the front door was open and his friends had gone to see what was happening.

Liam initially did not join them but later left the house and approached the group. It was then he was allegedly hit by the white van, which witnesses have described in court as sending the 18- year- old into the air.

Wright and Farrell deny murdering Liam and attempting to kill four others who were helping the teenager as he lay on the ground.

Mr Ewing’s mother Jacqueline Foy also gave evidence, saying she heard “a thud” as Liam was hit by the van.

The trial continues.
