Gordon signs new deal for Warriors

- Stuart Bathgate

TOM GORDON only came to Scotland for something to do during a gap year back in 2014. Seven years on, he is not only still here, but has just committed himself for another few seasons at least by signing a “longterm deal” to stay with Glasgow.

Now 23, the openside from New Zealand could complete one stage of his journey by winning his first cap for his adoptive country next month, and has already been included in the wider Scotland squad. It is a feat he never even dreamed about on first arriving here, when playing rugby at any level was not even top of his list of priorities.

“My uncle, John Muir, was president of Currie,” Gordon explained yesterday after his new Warriors contract was announced. “I came over to live with my relatives and to work and my intention wasn’t to play rugby. I was going to play when I was here, but it wasn’t the main intention.

“Currie were my first club at the top level in Scotland and I loved playing for them. I wish Currie were in the SuperSix so if I ever was released [ by Glasgow] I could play for them.”

When Gordon first signed for the Warriors it was on a partnership deal, which meant he could keep turning out for the Chieftains. But age- group honours soon followed, and his value to Glasgow became increasingly apparent. He may have been understudy to Callum Gibbins for much of the time over the past couple of seasons, but since the departure of the former club captain last summer he has matured noticeably, according to Warriors coach Danny Wilson. “Tom has really developed in the last six months via opportunities to play week in week out and shown his ability as an out- and- out seven,” Wilson said. “He is a modern seven, who not only defends well and gets over the ball but also carries and offers an attacking presence.”
