Glasgow woman sets up advice page
AYOUNG woman who was diagnosed with cancer days before the UK was plunged into a national lockdown has now set up a video blog to help other patients.
Inspiring Beth Clyde was just 21 years old when she received the devastating diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma last March.
Now, almost a year on, the recent University of Glasgow graduate is officially in remission and has set up a YouTube account detailing her journey of facing cancer treatment alone amid the coronavirus pandemic.
She said: “When I was diagnosed, there wasn’t much I could see to relate to so I thought maybe this will help people going through the same thing.
“I’ve already connected with few different people from all over the UK and even some from America.
“I’m really, really glad
I did it. People have been messaging me saying they’re so glad they found the channel how much it’s helped – it’s been really uplifting.”
As the Glasgow Times reported last year, brave Beth was sent for a scan to rule out the then- novel Covid- 19 after months of chest problems.
It was then medics spotted a mass on her lung and her gruelling seven- month battle against the disease began.
Tough restrictions meant the young woman, who hails from Priesthill, was unable to rely on any family support at her appointments and she was forced to shield with mum, Toni, at home.
However, Beth has remained positive throughout her ordeal and has vowed to help others going through a similar experience.
He vlog discusses everything from the difficulties of facing treatment alone to the beauty products which helped give her a confidence boost through it all. She said: “I’m doing really well. I’m out walking and getting my fitness back. I’ll still be having three- monthly check- ups for about a year but, I’m feeling positive about the future. “I’m excited for 2021. We got through last year, so we can do it again. I’m excited to get back to work soon hopefully and just see the girls again. It will be so nice when we can.”
Beth, who graduated with an honours degree in zoology while undergoing treatment last summer, has said her illness has made her rethink her chosen career path.
She is now considering the possibility of entering into a field which “helps people” after the response to her YouTube and Instagram pages.
Beth has amassed hundreds of followers online and is dedicated to helping other young people facing cancer.
“It’s quite common, sadly, so it’s nice to know you’re not the only one suffering,” she said.
“I would be happy to just help one person.
“If I look back to this time last year, when I was starting to get sick, it’s been the most mental year but, you definitely can get through it.”
