Cruel yobs trash school during ‘disgusting’ late night rampage

- BY JACK HAUGH

HEARTLESS yobs have trashed an East End school during a sickening late night raid. The vandals struck at St Maria Goretti Primary, in Cranhill, where they threw paint onto the walls and trashed displays made by pupils.

Children were left heartbroken by the damage at the Skerryvore Road hub, which occurred on Tuesday evening.

Glasgow MSP Anas Sarwar was among those to hit out at the hoodlums, encouraging anyone with information to contact police.

He said: “This is disgusting vandalism.

“It will be upsetting for teachers, parents and pupils, and cleaning up the damage will use up council resources at a time when the focus should be addressing the pandemic.

“I encourage anyone with information to contact the police.”

It’s understood to not be the first time yobs have damaged the school’s property in recent months, with local reports suggesting the primary has been pounced on six times since just before Christmas.

A number of other schools in the

East End have also fallen victim to louts, including nearby Carmyle Primary in October last year.

As we previously reported, youths entered the campus, snapped off nearly 80 tiles from the roof and smashed them over the playground area.

The damage was said to have cost the council around £3500. Schools in Glasgow are currently closed to the majority of pupils due to lockdown restrictions imposed to slow the spread of Covid-19.

On St Maria Goretti, a council spokeswoman pleaded for anyone with information to come forward. She said: “It’s always sad when our schools are vandalised – but even more so when schools are targeted when they are closed to the majority of our pupils because of lockdown. “Someone in the local community is bound to have information on the culprits and we would urge them to contact the police with any details.

Local police confirmed a probe had been launched into the damage with officers asking for information.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 9.30pm on Tuesday, January 12, police received a report of a housebreaking and vandalism to a school in Skerryvore Road, Glasgow.”
