Break-in blow for under-threat music studios
HEARTLESS crooks trashed a much-loved music venue and madeoff with cash donated to save the studio. The yobs struck at Carlton Studios at the weekend where they smashed windows and doors and ransacked its tills.
Around £1000 worth of damage was caused by the raiders while £200, which had been donated by members of the public, was pinched.
As we previously reported, the Carlton Place venue, one of the in Glasgow, is currently bidding to raise around £30,000 to cover expenses or face closing its doors for good.
Lesley O’Brien, events manager at Carlton Studios, said: “On Sunday morning, we were devastated to find the windows and doors had been smashed of our cafe and the grill ripped from the wall, with a piece of the sandstone lying on the floor.
“Thieves had entered via the cafe window, ransacked the place and stolen the till.
“After being uplifted by the outpouring of love, support and donations we have received via our Crowdfunder campaign, this was a real blow.
“However, we will not let it get us down and continue to work hard on saving this cherished resource in the Glasgow music scene.”
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers in Glasgow were called to the report of a theft by housebreaking at a premises on Carlton Place which happened sometime between 6pm on Saturday, and 10.10am on Sunday. “Enquiries are ongoing.” Carlton Studios has provided a crucial service to many local artists on their way to stardom, including The Fratellis, Biffy Clyro, Franz Ferdinand, and Turner Prize winner Duncan Campbell.
The Musician’s Union has declared it an “institution” in the Glasgow music scene.
And artists who have offered support include Mince Fratelli, Larry Love of The Alabama 3, Kenny Hyslop, the original drummer with Simple Minds and Slik, and Mary Kiani.
