SWOTY star sees get-fit drive reach milestone

- BY ANN FOTHERINGHAM

WHO should be crowned Glasgow Times Scotswoman of the Year and Young SWOTY 2020? Nominations continue to pour in in for our annual awards celebration, in association with St Enoch Centre.

We want to hear who you think should succeed last year’s winners – charity founder Dr Corinne

Hutton and climate change campaigner Holly Gillibrand. Young SWOTY is open to girls and young women aged between 12 and 21.

One of last year’s SWOTY finalists, Elaine Wyllie, is celebrating a huge milestone this week as the number of children taking part in her life-changing Daily Mile fitness initiative passes three million.

The Stirlingshire teacher, who was one of six women in the running for our 2019 award, said she was “overwhelmed” by the news that 12,000 schools across 79 countries are involved.

“Being fit and active is so important for everyone’s physical and mental health,” she said. “It’s an incredible moment in our effort to make a difference to the lives of children on a global scale.”

Elaine came up with the idea after noticing some pupils struggled to complete simple exercise sessions. Encouraging them to walk or jog 15 minutes each day, she got the whole school on board. Now, 970 Scottish schools including 104 in Glasgow take part.

It continued to support families throughout the pandemic with its Daily Mile At Home campaign and Elaine is now working with the Scottish Government on plans to make Scotland the world’s first Daily Mile Nation.
