Patterson keen to keep learning from Tavernier

- Alison McConnell

RANGERS kid Nathan Patterson caught the eye as he put in a decent showing off the bench on Saturday afternoon.

The 19-year-old was able to play with freedom given the game was long won by the time he arrived, but there was an aggression and energy to his play that bodes well for his longterm progress.

“I take any chance that I can get,” he said. “I’ve really embraced each opportunity. It’s showing on the pitch and I’m just looking forward to getting more and helping the boys to get some wins.”

Ibrox captain James Tavernier has helped to guide the youngster through into the first team with Patterson eager to take all the advice he can get.

“I don’t think Tav will be too down about missing a penalty,” he said. “He has scored a lot this season and really helped the team.

“He practises them every day so I don’t think it will [lead to a] downfall in his performance. He’s a great player and I think he will bounce back really well.

“Tav is great with me. Each day in training he’s talking, trying to help me improve my game. I’m all for trying to get as far as I can be so I really embrace it.”

And the youngster is keen to continue his education by getting as many minutes as he can this season. A number of Ibrox youngsters have headed out on loan for first-team experience but Patterson has been retained by Gerrard as Tavernier’s deputy.

“It’s obviously great knowing you have the backing from the coaching staff and especially the gaffer,” he said. “So it’s obviously just about making sure you’re ready when the opportunity comes your way.

“I’m always making sure give myself the best chance.

“[Going out on loan] is not something that has ever crossed my mind. I’m just focused on being at this club.”
