South Side projects secure £100k grants

- BY HEATHER CARRICK

TWO Glasgow projects have been given a £100,000 grant from sportscotland to help with vital upgrades to community resources. Govanhill Baths Building Preservation Trust and Hillwood Community Trust have both been awarded the funding from sportscotland’s £1.25 million Sport Facilities Fund.

Hillwood, a Pollok-based football community facility, will use the money to help develop a new pavilion.

Willian Smith, from the trust, said: “To get this funding is absolutely fantastic, we are delighted with it. It is very welcome and it will help to help us serve the community that we work in.

“By developing the pavilion, we will be able to open up more older people and get disabled people more actively involved with us.”

Hillwood will also use the new pavilion facility to help develop their women’s and girls’ section.

William said: “We launched our women’s and girls’ football right before the coronavirus pandemic so the development has been halted.

“This funding will go towards helping to develop this further and get as many people involved as possible.

“When we are open as normal, we have around 400 kids coming through our doors every week, so this funding will mean a lot to the entire Pollok community.

“We are certain our many

partners in the community such as the Priesthill Barratt Community Trust, Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Football Partnership, Rosehill Housing Association and Levern Community Council will be as equally as delighted as we are, and we look forward to securing the final funding required to complete the development”.

Govanhill Baths Building Preservation Trust will use the £100,000 to purchase gym equipment, installing a dance and yoga studio

and accessibility features into the historic Calder Street building.

The money will go towards the £9m fund currently being invested into the baths building to create a new community wellbeing centre.

David Cook, project director for Govanhill Baths Building Preservation Trust, said: “We’re delighted to secure this vital funding, particularly as it will help to widen out the sports and wellbeing activities across the very diverse communities of Govanhill.”
