- BY STEWART PATERSON

THE Labour Party has ranked its candidates for Glasgow list at this May’s Scottish Parliament election. Pauline McNeill tops the list after leadership contender Anas Sarwar, who topped the vote among members, stepped aside to ensure a woman was at the top of the city region list.

Mr Sarwar moves the list.

He is followed by Paul Sweeney, former Glasgow North East MP in third and Pam Duncan Glancy, a former Glasgow North Westminster Candidate, in fourth.

Labour currently has four list MSPs in Glasgow, including Ms McNeill and Mr Sarwar.

The ranking puts current MSP James Kelly further down the list at number five and at risk of losing his seat.

Glasgow councillor, Eva Murray, is sixth on the list.

Ms McNeill said: “I am delighted to be number one on the Glasgow list. It is an honour and a privilege. I would like to recognise the principled decision of Anas Sarwar to step aside for top spot to ensure Scottish Labour fulfils its promise to have half of our regional lists topped by women.”

Mr Sarwar said: “Thank you to Labour members across Glasgow for their amazing support and for electing me as our top candidate in the city I am proud to represent.

“We have a really strong Labour team going into this vital election. to second on

“Our SEC encouraged candidates to follow the STUC’s ‘Step Aside, Brother’ campaign to ensure that at least 50 per cent of our top candidates are women, and I want to lead by example so will be stepping aside from the top spot, meaning we can fulfil that ambition.”

Mr Sweeney, who was an MP for Glasgow North East between 2017 and 2019, said: “I’m grateful to Labour members in Glasgow for supporting my campaign to be a candidate for our party at the Scottish Parliament election, with the second-highest vote, and place on the regional list.

“We now have a strong team of candidates to lead our fight across the city.”

Ms Duncan Glancy said she was: “Very proud of the team who helped me get to fourth place on the list.”

Glasgow elects seven list MSPs in addition to the eight constituency MSPs. The SNP holds all eight constituency seats and on the 2nd vote list there are four Labour, two Conservative and one Green MSP. third
