Thug blamed ‘hangover’ for attack on two officers

- BY CATRIONA STEWART

ATHUG who dragged two police officers into oncoming traffic blamed his actions on a hangover. Kevin McGuire had been waiting in a queue at a branch of TSB when he thought officers – who were there for something else entirely – were looking at him.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard his behaviour made police suspicious so they approached him.

As constables Heather Feeney and Jordan McElhaney came towards McGuire at the Great Western Road bank he became “very agitated” and turned on the cops.

The officers attempted to put handcuffs on McGuire but he overpowered both of them, causing the disturbance to spill from the bank onto the pavement outside.

It was here, the court heard, that McGuire managed to drag the officers into oncoming traffic during the incident year.

They were so concerned by his behaviour that PC McElhaney activated his emergency button to summon back up.

Prosecutor Aimee Doran described McGuire as “violently resisting arrest”.

She added: “When the officers tried to handcuff the McGuire, he pulled them along them along the pavement, resisting arrest.

“He continued to resist and tugged from the cuffs, which resulted in constable Feeney landing on the road onto oncoming traffic.

“The accused pushed constable McElhaney and pushed constable Feeney to the ground and dragged them along the roadway.”

Ms Doran said McGuire fell on top of one of the officers before running off on foot towards Anniesland Cross.

Despite both officers being injured, they continued a search for the 26-year-old who was caught later that afternoon. of

When he was arrested and charged McGuire, from Thornliebank, said to officers: “I am sorry.”

PC Feeney suffered bruising under the left side of her chin, abrasions to both elbows, a cut to her arm.

PC McElhaney was left with an injured hand and sore back.

McGuire pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting the officers.

Gordon Nicol, defending, told the court: “Maybe because he was hungover from the night before he thought the officers were looking at him.

“This case may have arisen from a misunderstanding from the state he was in from the night before.”

Referring to the fact his client overpowered both police officers, the defence agent added: “It may be that they were slighter in build than Mr McGuire.

“He is pretty disgusted with the fact he appears here.”

Sheriff Alan Findlay tagged McGuire for six months, meaning he must stay at home between 7pm and 7am.

He said: “This is serious stuff here, people could have been badly injured.” leg and bruising to her
