Men tagged over brawl with hammer and bat
TWO men have been tagged after a topless fight with a hammer and a baseball bat in a South Side garden. Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that “bad blood” between George McNicol and Mark McGhee spilled over into a public brawl using weapons.
It ended when neighbours called the cops and McNicol, 42, was taken to hospital for injuries to his hand.
The court was told McNicol was with his partner at her Mount Florida home when McGhee, 23, unexpectedly turned up with a group of other people.
Believing there was a threat to his partner, McNicol took a metal baseball bat and went to confront McGhee.
Prosecutor Aimee Doran told the court McNicol went outside the property and began to remove his top in an “aggressive manner”.
She said: “There is bad blood between both named accused, a long running dispute.
“They met at the locus and members of the public observed Mr McNicol removing his top in what was described as an aggressive manner, and
the co-accused doing the same thing. McNicol brandished a metal baseball bat towards his co-accused who was brandishing a hammer.
“They engaged in a fight. “Police arrived and witnessed this occurring.
“Mr McNicol required to be conveyed to hospital for an injury to his left wrist and a chipped radius.”
McNicol’s defence said the situation, on agent April 22, 2020 came close to self-defence and told the court his client had been at his partner’s address when McGhee and others turned up at the property.
He said: “My client was with his partner minding his own business.”
McGhee’s defence brief told the court: “He has accepted his behaviour was unacceptable.
“He didn’t set out looking for trouble.”
The lawyer also told the court that McGhee, from Castlemilk, did not intend to use the hammer.
He added: “The hammer was used as a projectile – it was thrown to him and he picked it up.
“He wasn’t the instigator.” Sheriff Alan Findlay sentenced both men to seven month tags keeping them at home from 7pm to 7am.
