Study finds Glasgow has ‘worst rush hour’

- BY STEWART PATERSON

GLASGOW has the worst rush hour in the UK, according to an international study. The research by Fleetlogging compared how far you can travel out from the city centre at rushhour periods compared to off-peak times.

The cities with the biggest gap in miles between rush hour and other times were considered to be where hour had the most impact in comparison to the norm.

In the UK, the research found Glasgow had a 12-mile difference between peak and quieter times of the day.

Once out of the city centre area however, motorists can travel more than 40 miles in an hour.

London had the slowest traffic for the UK with vehicles only able to travel less than 15 miles in an hour out of the city at rush hour, and less than 25 miles at off-peak times.

The report stated: “London may have the worst traffic in our study, but it doesn’t have the worst rush hour in relative terms.

“Glasgow tops the list with a 12-mile discrepancy between rush hour and regular hours. But you can still make it 41.3 miles out of Glasgow during the busy periods – nearly twice as far as you can travel from London during rush hour.”

The study suggested that Glasgow having the three most congestrush ed roads in Scotland in a different study may be one of the reasons.

A 2017 study found Great Western Road heading west from St George’s Cross was the most congested road. It was followed by the M74 northbound – but roadworks at the time may have been a factor – as well as the M8 heading west though the city centre and Kingston Bridge as the most gridlocked.

Edinburgh was ranked 15th worst at 9.6 miles difference between rush hour and off peak.
