Science Centre online festival launches today

- BY HEATHER CARRICK

ANEW digital festival from Glasgow Science Centre begins today and promises to help beat the homeschooling blues with interactive sessions.

Curious About Our Planet will run from today until Saturday and will provide interactive workshops and activities to help understand climate change and the world around us.

The festival will mark the first time that Glasgow Science Centre has produced a digital-only programme.

Dr Stephen Breslin, CEO of the Glasgow Science Centre, said: “We are really excited to bring this festival to people. The ‘Curious About Our Planet’ festival is building on work that we have already been doing for years in our Curiosity Live, which is normally held in person at the centre.

“During Curiosity Live, we bring together industry partners, academics and school children, and this is our way of making this happen again while we are closed.”

The festival will include activities such as zoo tours, an interactive quiz and a session from climate activist Less Waste Laura.

Stephen said: “The aim of the festival is not only to make young people aware of the climate issues that are affecting us but also to encourage careers in the field. Before coronavirus was all we saw in the news, climate change was what we were talking about.

“The issue hasn’t disappeared and after Covid, it will be the most important thing in our lives again and young people had a very active role in that before lockdown.”

Not only is the festival helping to educate young people about the environment, but adults are also in for a treat with events such as an eco-friendly cocktail-making class.

The session, in collaboration with Zero Waste Scotland, will teach recipes for cocktails as alternatives to traditional drinks.

Although this is Glasgow Science Centre’s first foray into a digital-only festival, there are plans in the making to continue similar events.

Stephen said: “Doing a digital festival has allowed us to reach new people who maybe couldn’t visit the centre in person before.

“We are really excited about going digital and we are looking forward to combining in-person and online experiences in the future when we can reopen.”
