Pupils’ memories of city school wanted

- BY HAMISH MORRISON

FORMER pupils of a primary school are urged to come forward with their memories for its 50th anniversary. Suzanne Morton, a primary seven teacher at Miltonbank Primary School, is looking to hear from pupils past about what they think of fondly from their time at the school.

“For our 40th, we had a concert but obviously, because of Covid, we can’t do anything like that this year,” said Suzanne.

“We’re looking to get a collection of memories to share with parents and former pupils.

“One child has already sent a film of her saying what she likes about Miltonbank.

“Because I’ve been in the school for so long, I’m actually teaching the children of people that I taught.”

Her favourite memories of the school include Gillian Robertson joining as head teacher 10 years ago, the school’s annual spring show, and the nativity play.

“We also do the John Muir award and we planted a pond and an orchard, so we have a great outdoor learning space for the pupils,” Suzanne added.

“Gillian has made a big difference in a positive way. She introduced the school show, which I usually run, and the nativity with the primary ones, which is great for the community and the parents.

“We always have our Christmas fare, too. And we go to the outdoor centre at Blairvadach.”

The Helensburgh outdoor centre is remembered fondly by many Glasgow school pupils and a decision to close it was reversed last year.

Suzanne said: “We go there a lot and that is usually a big highlight for the children at Miltonbank.

Suzanne is in the process of hunting down a stray plaque that commemorates the school’s opening on February 24, 1971, including the names of the people present at the ceremony.

Chris Cunningham, the council’s convenor for education, said: “Happy half century to everyone associated with the school – a lovely excuse to celebrate.

“I know that these celebrations would be very different without the current restrictions but I’m sure that the school will do all that they can to make them special for the school community.”
