MEETING OF THE GREATS

Busby handed Stein top award ... with some legendary words in return

- Colin Bain

IT was quite a moment for football fans around the country, when Matt Busby presented Jock Stein with the team prize at the BBC’s Sports Review of 1967.

The two managerial titans shared a laugh and a good-natured exchange of greetings as the award was made in recognition of Celtic’s European Cup triumph in Lisbon the same year.

Legend has it that Stein, on receipt of the trophy, uttered the words: “We hope that the next hands on the European Cup are yours.”

It turned out to be prophetic – Manchester United, under Matt Busby, went on to win the European Cup in the following year’s competition.

The BBC Sports Review was the forerunner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, which is still going strong today.

In 1967, boxer Henry Cooper won the individual award.

He is one of only five people to win it more than once alongside Formula One drivers Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton and Damon Hill, and tennis superstar Andy Murray, who has won three times.

HAD one like that in 1986, he is now 34, and tough as nails (‘I was so scared’: Miracle baby born with 10 per cent chance of survival makes it home, Monday).

One key to his survival was a Toronto hospital in 1987, making artificial surfactant from calves to keep the lungs from collapsing.

Good luck, it gets better from here on in.

WHAT a beautiful baby and such a feel-good story.

Well done little one and everyone involved in keeping this little girl alive.

I FEEL sorry for the hospitality industry during this pandemic.

They really haven’t been given a chance to survive.

Many spent thousands to ensure their venues were ‘Covidcompliant’ and then were forced to close up again.

It will be interesting to see how many are able to reopen once restrictions are lifted.

WE asked readers on our Facebook page whether May’s election should go ahead. Here’s a selection of responses...

IF England holds local elections, I genuinely don’t see what the issue is.

Nick Watkins

OPEN more polling stations, less people at each one, less queues. Not that difficult. Jordan Kerr

THE election should be delayed until June at least – if not later. Stuart Clark

NO. I think we’ve got more to worry about than a b ***** election. Frances Haxton

INSTEAD of “stay home, save lives”, it will be “go out and vote”. John Wheeler

IT’S more than two months away and the way things are going with the pandemic, I see no reason why not.

Kenneth Downie

NO. Wrong time for an election. Though reluctantly decided to get a postal vote... Polling stations aren’t as good an idea in the current Covid climate.

Jill Ferguson

IF Nicola says nothing will open in Scotland before May, she has a right cheek allowing any indy marches to take place and holding elections.
